The Anita Borg Institute announces winners of 2013 Women of Vision and Top Company for Technical Women awards

Palo Alto, CA – The Anita Borg Institute (ABI, anitaborg.org) has announced the winners of the 2013 Women of Vision awards and the Top Company for Technical Women award, to be presented at the 2013 Women of Vision Awards Banquet on May 9 in Santa Clara, CA.

The Top Company for Technical Women award recognizes companies for “having demonstrated measurable results in the recruitment, retention, and advancement of technical women at all levels throughout their corporations.” This year’s winner is Intel Corporation. “Intel’s impressive forward momentum on almost every top company metric set it apart from other companies competing for the award,” says Dr Telle Whitney, ABI’s president and CEO. Intel has progams in place to retain technical women and has one of the lowest voluntary turnover rates among technical women, holding steady at 2 percent.

The Women of Vision awards honor women who have made significant contributions in technical fields. The winners were chosen for their outstanding achievements and important contributions to technology in innovation, effecting positive changes to the way technology serves society, and for their meaningful leadership in the technology industry which extends beyond the workplace.

The winners include Genevieve Bell, director of interaction and experience research at Intel Labs, recognized for leadership; Vicki Hanson, professor of inclusive technologies at the University of Dundee and research staff member emeritus at IBM Research, recognized for social impact; and Maja Matari, PhD, professor of computer science, neuroscience, and pediatrics at Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California, recognized for innovation.

According to Whitney, this year’s individual award winners represent the substantial achievements and contributions that women are making in technical roles. “ABI is proud to recognize Genevieve’s, Vicki’s, and Maja’s achievements and the contributions they have made in their fields. Additionally, we are delighted to recognize Intel for their success in recognizing, valuing, and rewarding the capabilities of technical women,” said Whitney.

ABI is a nonprofit organization focused on the advancement of women in computer science and engineering.


Siemens PLM Software continues investment in STEM education

Plano, TX – Siemens PLM Software has made a free high school edition of its Solid Edge software for 3D computer-aided design (CAD) available for educators in secondary schools throughout the world. The intent is to expose students to the engineering and product design tools used by manufacturers worldwide, and encourage them to pursue STEM careers, helping address the global skills shortage in engineering and related fields. Educators can download a free twelve-month academic site license at www.siemens.com/plm/solid-edge-highschool.

“The global manufacturing community, including our customers, needs a steady stream of engineering talent that understands how to use modern technology to innovate and create products to meet the demands of the marketplace,” said Karsten Newbury, senior vice president and general manager for mainstream engineering software at Siemens PLM. “As students enter high school they begin making decisions about higher education and potential careers. The free high school edition of Solid Edge will expose students to advanced CAD design, giving them a glimpse into possible career opportunities.”

The high school edition of Solid Edge contains Siemens PLM Software’s unique synchronous technology, which combines the speed and flexibility of direct modeling with the precise control of dimension-driven design. Schools will have access to the full function modules of Solid Edge drafting, sheet metal, surfacing and advanced assembly design. Educators can renew the free license annually.


Chrysler Group named 'Corporation of the Year' at seventeenth Annual Urban Wheel Awards

Aetna appoints Nancy Ham chief executive officer of Medicity

Salt Lake City, UT – Aetna has announced the appointment of Nancy Ham to chief executive officer of Medicity. Medicity, an Aetna subsidiary, provides health information exchange technology solutions for hospitals, physicians and health information exchange (HIE) organizations.

“Nancy’s extensive health care leadership experience, and in particular her experience working with providers on solutions for practices and health systems, will greatly benefit Medicity,” said Charles E. Lockheed Martin employees honored at BEYA

Bethesda, MD – Lockheed Martin engineers and scientists received fifty-three prestigious honors at the annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Global Competitiveness Conference, held in Washington, DC in February.

“We’re proud of our long history of supporting this conference because we understand the critical importance of introducing young people to careers in science, technology, engineering and math,” said Lockheed Martin president and CEO Marillyn Hewson. “Through our partnership with BEYA, we’re able to broaden our reach and build a stronger pipeline of talent to help maintain our nation’s technology leadership.”

Patricia Lewis, human resources vice president, Information Systems & Global Solutions, received an affirmative action award acknowledging her efforts to promote advancement in education, job promotion, small-business development and community activities.

Anthony Wingate, manager of subsystems and components for quality engineering at Sandia National Labs, received the diversity leadership award for his commitment to minorities in technology. Sandia is managed by Lockheed Martin.

CH2M Hill joins Think Beyond the Label collaborative to find and recruit job seekers with disabilities

Chrysler Group engineer receives prestigious Black Engineer of the Year Visionary Award

Auburn Hills, MI – Larry Williams, director of interior engineering at Chrysler Group LLC, received the 2012 Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Visionary Award at the twenty-seventh BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference and Awards Gala in February.

“Larry is an accomplished engineer and exceptional leader who approaches life and work with passion, using his breadth of experience to create exceptional products and committing himself to the development of young, talented engineers in our company,” said Mark M. Chernoby, senior vice president of engineering at Chrysler Group. “Larry’s vision, drive and technical expertise have made him a valuable member of the Chrysler engineering team and a respected leader across the company.”

Williams was appointed director of interior engineering at Chrysler Group in 2011. He’s responsible for leading and managing the design, development and release of interior systems and components for all Chrysler Group vehicles. He joined Chrysler Corporation as a product development engineer in 1985.

“I owe much of who I am to the strong African American leaders who met adversity and paved the way for my success,” Williams said. “Inspired by these outstanding people and role models, I know that it is both my responsibility and privilege to lead and inspire the next generation. I am very appreciative of this recognition of my career accomplishments.”


Dr Ellen Ochoa named Johnson Space Center director

Houston, TX – Dr Ellen Ochoa, a veteran astronaut, has been named the eleventh director of the Johnson Space Center (JSC). She succeeded Michael L. Coats when he retired at the end of 2012. Before being named director, she had served as the deputy director at JSC since September 2007.

“Ellen’s enthusiasm, experience and leadership, including her superb job as deputy director, make her a terrific successor to Mike as director of JSC,” said Charles F. Bolden, Jr, NASA administrator.

Ochoa, from La Mesa, CA, became the first Hispanic woman to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1993. Prior to her astronaut career, she was a research engineer and inventor, with three patents for optical systems.

Ochoa earned a bachelors degree in physics from San Diego State University, and a masters degree and doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. She managed the intelligent systems technology branch at NASA’s Ames Research Center (Moffett Field, CA) before being selected as an astronaut in 1990. She flew on four shuttle missions from 1993-2002, logging a total of 978 hours in space.

Ochoa was deputy director of flight crew operations at JSC in December 2002 and director of flight crew operations in September 2006. She will be JSC's first Hispanic director and its second female director.


Chrysler Group named among the fifty best employers for Hispanic women

Auburn Hills, MI – The editors of Latina Style magazine have selected Chrysler Group LLC for inclusion on the magazine’s annual list of the fifty best companies for Hispanic women in the U.S.

The Latina Style 50 Report, now in its fourteenth year, highlights companies that have diverse recruitment and promotion initiatives, including programs to recruit veterans and military personnel. Chrysler Group was recognized for its inclusion on the list at the February Latina Style awards ceremony in Washington, DC.

Mitre employees honored at Black Engineer of the Year Awards

McLean, VA – Three engineers at the Mitre Corporation were recognized for their technical expertise and leadership at the 2013 Black Engineer of the Year Awards STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in February. Ben King, Sr, received a career achievement award; James Tolbert II, and Nickyra Washington received modern-day technology awards.

“We’re honored that BEYA chose to recognize Ben, James and Nickyra for their professional achievements and commitment to their communities,” said Karen Quinn-Quintin, VP and chief HR officer at Mitre. “Their dedication to fulfilling Mitre’s mission to address issues of critical national importance while investing in and inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders gives us great pride in their accomplishments.”

Ben King, Sr is a multi-discipline systems engineer in the organization’s command and control center within the DoD-sponsored National Security Engineering Center (NSEC). Through the Mitre and T.C. Williams High School Engineering and Enrichment Program, King has volunteered to help students with several technical projects, striving to instill a love of science and research in the next generation. He also is a member of the Chantilly Pyramid Minority Student Achievement Committee, which recognizes minority youth in the Fairfax County area for their academic achievements. King holds a masters degree in computer and information sciences from George Mason University, and bachelors degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of South Alabama.

James Tolbert II is a senior software engineer in Mitre’s Center for Integrated Intelligence Systems (CIIS) within the NSEC. Tolbert holds a masters degree in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University, a masters degree in computer science from Howard University and a bachelors degree in computer science from MIT. An accomplished dancer, Tolbert has performed competitively and professionally and earned a minor in theater arts from MIT. While completing his graduate studies, Tolbert volunteered to run a motion capture lab at a local high school, where students learned how to use sensors to capture human movement and convert it into data that computers can process. Nickyra Washington is a senior information security engineer/scientist in the CIIS. Outside Mitre, she is co-chair of the board for the Jennifer F. Lewis Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to raising awareness about ovarian cancer, and leads the foundation’s academic scholarship program. She is also a mentor to inner-city adolescents and teenage girls through the Daughters of Destiny mentoring program. Washington holds masters degrees in information systems management and business administration from the University of Maryland-University College, and a bachelors degree in criminology and pre-law from the University of Maryland-College Park.
